What is Pink Himalayan Salt?
Himalayan salts are mineral-packed sea salts with tones ranging from dark salmon to baby pink. The lovely, delicate tones speak of varying degrees of mineral density present in each large crystal. Himalayan salt comes from the Himalayan mountain range which stretches across the vast Asian continent from China to India. It is interesting to note that this salt lies in the mountains and not in the sea, where one usually surmises salt comes from. Two hundred fifty millions years before we were even a thought, the Himalayas had crystallized salt sea beds that came to be protected by lava and cooled by deep layers of snow and ice. The salt beds remained underground for thousands upon thousands of millennia, immaculately uncontaminated by pollutants such as PCBs and heavy metals. As such, Himalayan salt is said to be the purest salt in the whole world.
Purity aside, this pink condiment contains a whopping 84 trace minerals. About 85% of Himalayan salts are packed with sodium chloride and a little over 14% consist of calcium, sulphate, magnesium, potassium, bromide, borate, and seventy eight more important minerals.
What Makes Himalayan Salt Superior to Table Salt?
If there’s anything like top shelf among salts, Himalayan salt is it. Himalayan salt not only places the pretty in your table setting but it also packs a healthy punch to your meals with a powerhouse of minerals.
A top often pairs with a bottom and table salt takes the bottom shelf of the lot. Commercial table salt is highly refined sea salt. Just like white sugar, white table salt is a stripped down version of itself and therefore almost devoid of most of its minerals with the exception of sodium and chloride.
Because refined sea salt has been stripped of beneficial minerals, it has nothing healthy to offer. The whiter the salt (and the sugar), the “badder” it is. It is refined snow white crystals that actually give salt a bad name. Although table salt comes stripped of minerals, it is loaded with chemicals to produce a free-flowing product. Common additives are talc and silica aluminate. Talc is a suspected carcinogen (hence the switch to cornstarch in baby powders). An accumulation of aluminium over time can lead to Alzheimer’s and other neurological problems if there is not enough selenium in the body to chelate it.
Synthetic iodine is also a common additive in table salt after discoveries that refined iodine-deficient salt caused goitres and other chronic degenerative diseases. Note that iodine is abundant in natural, unadulterated sea salts. Synthetic iodide, however, cannot be readily processed by our bodies. It causes sodium to build up within our organs over time, leading to a host of severe health issues. If you note that stripped down salt is present in most commercially prepared food and snacks, think of the enormous health consequences that we face today. These may have seemingly stemmed from other factors but may in truth have begun from people’s innocent but chronic consumption of refined salt.
The whiter the salt, the farther you stay away from it. Full spectrum or complete mineral laden salts is not white at all. Some are sandy or brownish in colour like Celtic sea salt or carry a rosé blush like pink Himalayan salt.
Is Himalayan Salt Better Than Unrefined Sea Salt?
Although you are much better off ditching table salt forever for unrefined sea salt, pink Himalayan salt is clearly top brass salt for your health.
